MARH BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
Thursday, March 15th at 1PM
On March 15th, the Third Thursday Book Group at the Hampstead Public Library will be discussing "Caleb’s Crossing” by Geraldine Brooks.
In 1665, a young man from Martha’s Vineyard became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. Upon this slim historical thread, the author has created a tale of love, faith, and adventure. The main character, Bethia yearns for an education that is not available to her because of her gender. She manages to slip away to explore the island's glistening beaches and observe its native Wampanoag inhabitants. At twelve, she encounters Caleb, the young son of a chieftain, and the two forge a secret friendship that draws each into the alien world of the other. Bethia’s minister father takes Caleb under his wing and begins his formal education. Bethia and Caleb eventually travel to Cambridge to pursue their educations, each in their own way.
Copies of the book are available at the library’s front desk. Newcomers are
always welcome.
