ART EXHIBIT
DISPLAYING ARTIST
GEORGE CHEN
The oil-painted Chinese artwork of George Chen will be on display at the Hampstead Public Library during the months of May and June 2012 in the library’s second floor meeting room. George Chen uses oil paints on canvas to express his interpretation of traditional Chinese images. He has an exceptional talent of imitating Chinese masterpieces and executing images he recalls from paintings he saw in his childhood.
George was raised in Viet Nam where his father, a Chinese businessman, had moved his family. While in Viet Nam, George was enrolled at the Century Art School in Saigon and worked with great artists. In 1984, he moved to Lowell, MA with his wife. For a while he worked at painting and decorating furniture for a local manufacturer. Since 2001, George has been creating exquisite images on canvas. He uses non-traditional techniques like wiping sandpaper over dried oil paint to create just the right texture to make an Asian camel or horse come to life. In 1998, George developed a new kind of oil paint which can be used on canvas to imitate Chinese painting style.
Mr. Chen has exhibited his work in New England as well as Salt Lake City, UT and Los Angeles, CA. He has received numerous awards including certificates of appreciation from the Global Artists Association USA and the Chinese Calligraphy & Painting Society USA for his contributions in promoting cultural exchanges and for his extraordinary visual arts experience.
